Could 2018’s box office reign as the all-time highest Malayalam grosser be short-lived? The Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali-starrer had overtaken Mohanlal’s Lucifer and Pulimurugan for the crown, but the superstar has four big upcoming movies – Jeethu Joseph’s Ram, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Empuraan, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Malaikottai Vaaliban and his own directorial debut Barroz set to release in theatres in the next one and a half years.

While Jeethu’s Ram is currently expected to release first during this year’s Onam, Barroz is another title that has been floated. In fact, a few days ago, the makers of the movie shared an interesting update about the film, confirming that Barroz will hit theatres this year.

Last year, Mohanlal had confirmed that the movie will release in March 2023. However, pending VFX work has delayed the release. Now, we hear that the film’s distribution rights have been picked up by Disney that is planning to release the movie in over 20 languages across the world.

The film’s OTT rights is also rumoured to be sold to Disney+ Hotstar, which had bought Mohanlal’s Alone, Monster and Bro Daddy – all three of which were produced by Aashirvad Cinemas that is also backing Barroz.

The movie has Mohanlal essaying the role of a 300-year-old guardian ghost, who protects the treasure of Vasco Da Gama to transfer it to its rightful heir. His relationship with a young girl and their adventures together form the plot of this 3D children’s fantasy, which marks the directorial debut of the superstar.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal is currently shooting for another big budget venture with Kannada director Nanda Kishore. The upcoming movie, which will be a Malayalam-Telugu bilingual that will also be dubbed in other languages, is a father-son action drama that will be set in multiple time periods. Mohanlal is next expected to begin shooting for Empuraan, which marks the second instalment in the Lucifer franchise.
