BBC documentary on Indian PM Narendra Modi to be screened at the Australian Parliament

The BBC documentary India: The Modi Question is all set to be screened at the Australian Parliament House in Canberra. The screening will be held on May 24 and the event is being organised by a bunch of diaspora organisations including Amnesty International, Periyar Ambedkar Thoughts Circle-Australia and The Humanism Project to name a few. Interestingly, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Sydney in Australia the same week.

India: The Modi Question is a two-part documentary series aired by BBC. The documentary revolves around the Gujarat riots in 2002, which claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, left over 2,000 injured and lakhs displaced. The documentary covers the political career of the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi and his alleged role in the sectarian violence.

The Ministry of External Affairs of the government of India called the documentary a 'propaganda piece' and stated that the documentary lacked objectivity and displayed its 'colonial mindset'.

The government ordered YouTube to take down the documentary a day after the first part was aired and also asked Twitter to remove posts related to the film. The docuseries is currently not being screened in India.

In the meantime, critics of Narendra Modi urged people to watch the documentary and organized special screenings of the same. Later, I-T raids were held in the BBC offices of New Delhi.
