Bollywood got the survival game genre before Netflix’s Squid Game, reveal netizens

The Korean drama Squid Game that dropped on Netflix very recently, and has been thrilling viewers with its twisted, gritty plotline is not a one-of-its-kind show, feel netizens who have watched it.

The viewers have traced and pointed out similarities in the basic plot structure of the survival game series with the 2009 Bollywood film Luck. The Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, and Shruti Haasan starrer that fared poorly at the box office and garnered flak from the critics, has been cited by the Twitterati as the film that got to the survival game genre first, years ago.

Squid Game is a nine-part series that follows 450 cash-strapped contestants who play for life and grand prize money through six games that have been conceptualised for them. Those who make it through the stages go on to the next game, and those who don’t, drop dead. The film Luck that was directed by Soham Shah was loosely adapted from the Spanish thriller Intacto and revolved around a mafia kingpin who prides himself on his luck, investing in a survival game, where he brings onboard cash-strapped people to defy death in deadly games and crack the jackpot.

Jil Shah posted that her brother pointed out the similarities between Squid Game and Luck and she feels that he is 'right on some level.'

Twitter user Sadaf pointed out about 'originality of content and creativity' in her tweet, posting that Squid Game is similar to Luck which in turn is similiar to Hollywood film Condemned.

Another user Tanya Sharma mentioned the plot synopsis of Squid Game and pointed out the similarity between the series and Luck.

Meanwhile, Squid Game has certainly made waves with the viewers as the storyline is lapped up well by the audiences. One of the leads on the series, HoYeon Jung shot to fame with the series significantly, gaining over 9.1 million followers on Instagram just a few days after the show was released on the platform.

Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game stars an ensemble cast of Korean actors Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon. Heo Sung-tae, Kim Joo-ryoung and also Indian actor Anupam Tripathi.
