What is Boong about?

Boong (2024), directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, is a critically acclaimed Manipuri coming-of-age drama. Following a young boy’s search for his missing father amid Manipur’s ethnic strife, it combines childhood innocence with poignant social commentary and became India’s first BAFTA-winning film.

Boong translates to “little boy” in the Manipuri language. Set in the volatile, conflict-ridden valley of Manipur, 9-year-old Boong sets out to find his father, who left home many years ago to run a furniture store in the border town of Moreh and has stopped communicating with his family.

Unwilling to accept rumours of his father’s death, Boong sets out with his loyal friend Raju on an emotional journey toward the Myanmar border, determined to bring his father home as a heartfelt surprise for his mother, Mandakini. This film explores innocence, resilience, and the impact of socio-political tensions on everyday life, seen through the eyes of a child.

Lakshmipriya Devi on Boong winning BAFTA

Director Lakshmipriya Devi shared that she wants to dedicate the win and the opportunity to pray for peace in Manipur. She hopes that every internally displaced child, especially the child actors who are part of the film, can regain their happiness, innocence, and the dreams they deserve.

"We pray that no conflict is ever formidable enough to destroy the one superpower that all of us have as human beings, that is, forgiveness. So thank you, BAFTA, for giving us not only an award, but this stage to express our hope," she said.

On the other hand, taking to his social media account, Farhan Akhtar congratulated Lakshmipriya Devi on Boong winning the BAFTA.

He wrote, "Could not be happier for #LaksmipriyaDevi & the cast of crew of #Boong .. massive congratulations to them for creating a beautiful and heartwarming gem of a film and this recognition. Feel so proud to be a part of this film and to see it honoured on the @BAFTA stage was truly an unforgettable moment. Thank you to the jury. This means a lot to the dreamers and storytellers back home."

Ahead of its theatrical release, Boong was already screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival.
