Bruce Willis has retired from acting, but here are 10 of his films that fans swear by

Whether it’s rescuing the world from baddies or outsmarting authorities to carry out massive heists, Bruce Willis has done it all, with one of his last being Deadlock (available to stream on Lionsgate Play) in which he leads a rag-tag band of mercenaries to settle scores. In his illustrious career spanning over three decades, the dashing action actor has displayed his versatile acting chops and earned critical and commercial acclaim time and time again. So, we’ve listed Bruce Willis top 10 films you absolutely must watch!

Die Hard Series (Apple iTunes, Google Play Movies, YouTube)

No list about Bruce Willis is complete without mentioning Die Hard; it’s just that good! Taking on the role of the tough cop John McClane like a fish takes to water, Willis delivers a performance that’s deemed a pop culture phenomenon. Willis imbues the portrayal with humour and vulnerability, despite playing a persistent underdog saving hostages from an office building. Once you’re hooked to Die Hard you’ll become a diehard Bruce Willis fan.

The Sixth Sense (Disney+ Hotstar, Google Play Movies, Apple iTunes)

Even if you’ve somehow missed this cult classic, you’ve heard the now-famous dialogue, “I see dead people”. Willis plays the role of a child psychologist working with a young boy (Haley Joel Osment) who, well, sees dead people. Showcasing his penchant for dramatic acting, Willis stuns audiences with his pitch-perfect portrayal. Without giving spoilers, catch this one for the shocking twist new viewers are still talking about, more than two decades after the film first released.

Unbreakable (Disney+ Hotstar, Apple iTunes)

After The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan and Willis delivered another masterpiece – Unbreakable. The movie features Willis as an ordinary father who finds out that he might not be so ordinary after all. Playing a man searching for answers after living a life mired in tragedy, Willis delivers a quiet performance that packs a punch. Paired with powerhouse Samuel L. Jackson, Willis’ moving performance will make you tear up!

Armageddon (Disney+ Hotstar, Google Play Movies, Apple iTunes, YouTube)

If there’s anyone you could call to save the planet from an annihilating asteroid, it would probably be Bruce Willis. Willis plays a father who takes on a dangerous mission to save not only humanity, but also his daughter (Liv Tyler). As the man heading to space to literally blow up an asteroid, Willis touches viewers’ hearts with his emotional performance. This Bruce Willis movie, also starring Ben Affleck, will take you on a full-on ride!

Death Becomes Her (Apple iTunes, Google Play Movies, YouTube)

Bruce Willis in an out-and-out comic role, do you need any more convincing? Willis plays a plastic surgeon and the object of two women’s affections – Hollywood legends Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. When the two women drink potions offering eternal youth, Willis’ character is taken for an absurd tragi-comic ride. Playing a grey, but extremely funny character, Willis becomes his character, and how!

Looper (Amazon Prime Video, MX Player, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Apple iTunes)

When you think of Bruce Willis’ onscreen persona, the words ‘infallible’ or ‘indestructible come to mind. Looper takes these expectations and subverts them, offering a refreshing take. The film centres around a mob using time travel to send its targets to the past to get executed by ‘loopers’. Bruce Willis plays the older version of looper Joe, with Joseph Gordon Levitt playing the younger one. This film allows Willis to act his age and display a more humane persona affected by the ravages of time. A film so good, you’ll rewatch it on a loop!

12 Monkeys (Netflix)

Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in one film; sign us up! This zany sci-fi film sees Willis star as a prisoner being sent back in time to unearth the source of a deadly virus, so scientists can devise a cure in the future. Although Brad Pitt snagged an Oscar for his whacky performance as the unstable Jeffrey Goines, it is Willis who keeps the film grounded. Projecting gravitas, and chemistry with his co-stars like never before, he commits to the film and how.

Over the Hedge (Netflix, Google Play Movies, JioCinema, YouTube)

Recognising the heft and power in his voice, Willis strikes again with an animated film! The film picks up when a group of forest animals find their land being encroached upon by developers. They seek help from a crafty racoon RJ, voiced by Willis, who tricks them into serving his own purposes. Willis perfectly captures RJ’s cunning personality, delivering a masterful voice performance as the character has a change of heart. Clever and funny, you can easily watch this one with the entire family!

16 Blocks (Netflix)

Sometimes, all you need is an out-and-out action film, and Willis knows how to deliver just that! 16 Blocks has Willis starring as New York City cop Jack Mosley tasked to escort a witness Eddie (Mos Def), from custody to a courthouse. When the duo is attacked en route, Mosley realises that the police department wants Eddie dead. With his strong and earnest performance, Willis breathes life into this buddy-action film. 16 Blocks is a wild ride that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat!

The Jackal (Netflix, iTunes, Google Play Movies, YouTube)

If playing a tough-as-nails operative is an art, Bruce Willis is an absolute artist. The plot of Jackal revolves around an incarcerated sniper who is released from prison to prevent a gruesome assassin from executing the chief of the FBI. While Richard Gere stars as the ex-convict sniper, Willis surprises audiences by playing the anti-hero assassin codenamed ‘The Jackal’. As the two characters engage in a deadly cat-and-mouse chase, a lot of drama enfolds. If you’re looking for high-stakes thrills, it doesn’t get much better than this!
