About Bugonia

Bugonia is the English adaptation of the South Korean film from 2003 titled Save The Green Planet! The Jang Joon-hwan directorial starred Shin Ha-kyun and Baek Yoon-sik in the lead roles. While the original film featured male leads, Emma replaced Yoon-sik in the English adaptation as the suspected alien.

Much like Save The Green Planet!, Bugonia’s prime premise is that of a conspiracy theorist assured that an alien resides among their midst. Emma Stone, who plays the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company in the adaptation, is believed to be the very alien. She is seen in the role of Michelle Fuller and is best remembered for shaving off her head as her character demanded that. Jesse Plemons plays the role Teddy Gatz, who kidnaps her and plots revenge for his mother’s poisoning.

While Joon-hwan was supposed to return as the director for Bugonia (left citing health reasons), Yorgos Lanthimos took over. Before him stepping down, Joon-hwan chose Emma as the lead for the movie.

Although Bugonia remained only in nominations for BAFTA 2026, it has also been chosen for the upcoming Academy Awards (Oscars race). Whether the movie grabs any award there remains to be seen.
