The trailer of Arindam Sil’s Byokmesh Hatyamancha is out and it promised a gripping murder mystery against the backdrop of the political unrest in Kolkata in the ’70s. The film is scheduled to release on August 11. Abir Chatterjee is back as Satyanweshi Byomkesh Bakshi four years after Byomkesh Gotro. While Sohini Sarkar will be seen as his wife Satyabati as usual, Suhotra Mukhopadhyay will be seen as his aide, Ajit.

The trailer shows that an actor is murdered right on the stage while performing a play, Kichak Badh. The crime took place right in front of Byomkesh, Satyabati and Ajit as they had attended the show as the viewers. Byomkesh gets on with the investigation and soon realised that there are two murderers at play. Throughout the trailer we see Byomkesh interrogating the artiste of the troupe. The period piece is also set in the backdrop of the ’70s Naxalite movement in Kolkata.

Byomkesh Hatyamancha is based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s incomplete novel Bishupal Badh. The script was later developed by Arindam and Padmanabha Dasgupta, who is also playing a character in the film.

The shooting of the film was done on a tight schedule in June. In an earlier interview, Arindam talked about the ‘hectic’ shooting schedule. He informed us that the shooting was completed in 20 days. “We had long hours, late-night shoots. It was not easy to recreate 1971 Kolkata. But everything went well and plans were executed properly,” he said.

Produced by SVF and Camellia Productions, the film will hit the theatre on August 11.
