Filmmaker-actor Ameer expressed some strong sentiments against the current state of award shows. During a recent press interaction, he claimed that all awards show across the world have lost legitimacy and integrity. He was making these comments when he was asked his thoughts on director SS Rajamouli's RRR winning an Oscar.

I don't think (Oscars) is not the ultimate recognition for art. Since everyone watches it, it has some significance. We can assume that it is that country's National Award. But, when Indian movies get such recognition on such platforms, it's a proud moment for us. I feel like I got that award,"

However, he suggested that the awards functions lost all merits some three decades as they all now become part of big business transactions. "I believe there is politics in all awards shows, including state, national or private awards. They all function through various lobbies. We don't have to get into it too much," he added.

And he cited the example of Superstar Rajinikanth winning the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for best actor for his performance in Sivaji. "Hand on heart, can we call Rajinikanth the best actor? He's the best entertainer. He's superstar, there is no question about that," said Ameer.

Ameer's jibe at Rajinikanth has left many wondering whether he's still upset about Karthi not winning that award for Paruthiveeran. Ameer wrote and directed Paruthiveeran, which was also released in 2007. The movie marked Karthi's screen debut as a lead actor. Karthi delivered a very powerful performance as a village toughie who mellows after falling in love with a girl. It seems Ameer still has not made peace with Karthi missing out on that award. But, Paruthiveeran bagged given the second-best film award at Tamil Nadu State Film Award. And the film's female lead Priyamani won Best Actress and Karthi was given a special prize at the awards.
