CCL2026 Match 5: Rahul Majumdar's 5 wicket haul set up the super over that went in the Bengal Tigers' favour

Chennai Kings won the toss and sent Bengal Tigers in to bat and restricted them to a total of 185, which did not seem very daunting. In fact, Kings skipper Vikranth began the chase at such pace as if he wanted to end it in 10 overs. The Tigers struggled to get rid of the Kings’ top order, but once they did, they dismantled the rest of the batting order in such clinical fashion that the scores were eventually tied, forcing a super over. And there, the Tigers with nerves of steel got the better of the Kings in style.

Did the Bengal Tigers set up a formidable target?

Sent in to bat, Joy and Indrashish got the team off to a good start, but then the latter was sent back and in came Jammy. The batsman, Jammy, who was the major architect in the Tigers’ successful chase of 200 in their match against the Heroes, came in. By the 10 over mark, they’d gotten the team to 95 for the loss of 1. This, though, was not Jammy’s day and he left, adding only 31 to the total. After Joy’s wicket fell, Rahul tried to steady the innings, but he just wasn’t getting much support at the other end. His 43 from 21 balls also went a long way in helping the Tigers get to their eventual total of 185 for the loss of 8 wickets.

At the start of the innings, the Kings had some fumbles on the field, but once they got that first wicket, something changed. Catch it calls were caught, strokes that seemed boundary bound were cut short and restricted to 1-2 run additions only and throws were clean, which allowed the Kings to effect run outs. This also meant that the Tigers did not get the acceleration that they were hoping for in the latter half of their innings.

Vels Chennai Kings stumbled in their chase when it most mattered

Vikranth, who got rid of 4 of the Tigers’ batsmen, including Joy and Rahul, opened the run chase and put his foot firmly on the accelerator immediately. 2-time CCL champions and last year’s runners up, the Chennai team seemed intent to make quick work of the total. In 3 overs, they were already at 43-0. The Tigers were able to break the opening partnership only in the 5th over with the score at 60, when they got Sharan (18) out. Dangerman Vikranth was still around, but not for long, adding only 4 more runs before being caught off a full toss delivery. He’d made 45 from 14 balls only, with the team score 66-2.

With two new batsmen at the crease, the flow of runs slowed down for a bit, but once they found their footing, both Shantanu and Prithvi got going. The two of them got the Kings as close to the finish line as possible, but once they left, there was a little bit of a collapse and it seemed that the Tigers had redirected the match in their favour. But then Dasarathi came in and in only two balls, leveled the scores, lost his wicket. Then Rahul clean-bowled the next man in, Satya. The score, 185 for 9 with one ball and an over to spare.

Pari Elavazhagan was on strike and all he had to do was hold out for one more run. But then Rahul bowled him too, and for the first time in the history of CCL, the super over was in play. 8 wickets had fallen with only 31 runs on the scoreboard.

Kings skipper Vikranth came in and charged at Rahul, but his loft to the boundary landed safely in a fielder’s hand. They made 7 eventually, with the Tigers chasing 8 for a win. Jammy nudged the first ball for a single, Rahul hit a massive 6 next and then got the single they needed. And it was game over for the Kings.
