R Balki (whose credits include Cheeni Kum, Paa and Pad Man) and Dulqer Salmaan are teaming for the first time on Chup a thriller, where a serial killer brutally murders Bollywood critics and carves star ratings on their foreheads.

Billed as a homage to master filmmaker Guru Dutt and his 1959 classic Kaagaz Ke Phool the film will stream on Zee5, once it completes its theatrical run.

Also featuring Sunny Deol, Pooja Bhatt, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Saranya Ponvannan, Chup will hit the big screens on September 23.

Chup is special to Balki for several reasons. It marks the debut of Amitabh Bachchan as a music composer, who created the end title track of the movie.

“Amitji saw Chup and instinctively composed a piece of original music on his piano. It was his way of paying homage to the film and expressing how he felt about it. The Chup end title track will use this composition. There isn't a creative talent who can match Bachchan's sensitivity, and Chup has his touch,” Balki said in a statement.

Bankrolled by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Anil Naidu, Dr Jayantilal Gada (PEN Studios) and Gauri Shinde, the screenplay and dialogues of Chup are written by Balki, critic-turned-writer Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani. Vishal Sinha is credited as director of photography.

SD Burman, Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar, and Aman Pant are credited as music composers.

The two-minute trailer of Chup gives a few details while introducing us to Sunny, Dulquer Salmaan, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Pooja Bhatt's characters. Sunny plays the cop and we see Dulquer and Shreya as a cinephilic couple. The trailer says that the killer is an artist taking revenge on film critics. So, is Dulquer the victim or the killer? We should wait and watch.

In an interview with Variety referring to Dulquer Salmaan, R Balki said, “He's one of the most amazing actors I've ever seen, and even though he's a superstar, it's uncommon to see someone with that sort of talent, who is still relatively new to Hindi cinema. People don't have a preconceived notion of what kind of star he is, and that makes for a fantastic combination.”
