Serve in my language – that’s a commonly heard refrain from Kannada audiences, at least on social media. The ground reality, though, is rarely conducive enough for filmmakers to consider putting in the effort to have a quality Kannada dubbed version in theatres. Barring Mahavatar Narsimha and Pushpa 2 The Rule, no other film has come close to the Rs 10 cr mark in the Kannada dubbed version.

Recently, Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie was expected to rewrite this record, considering that it was a Lokesh Kanagaraj film, and had a stellar star cast, including Kannada actors Upendra and Rachita Ram in important roles. The film, though, did not even manage to surpass the Rs 5.7 cr recorded by the actor’s Jailer in 2023. Coolie ended its theatrical run with only Rs 4.05 cr coming from its Kannada dubbed version.

According to box office trackers, Coolie, which was reportedly made at a budget of around Rs 350 cr to Rs 400 cr, grossed in the vicinity of Rs 515 cr world-wide, with the India net a tad below the film’s budget. Coolie is now set to drop on Amazon Prime Video, a deal that should have put the makers comfortably in the profit zone. Coolie will begin streaming on Prime Video from September 11, 2025.

The film, meanwhile, had high expectations, with netizens speculating that it had a sci-fi connect. However, when it released, they were in for disappointment, as Lokesh had presented nothing more than a revenge tale, with Rajinikanth’s Deva avenging the death of his close pal, Rajashekar (Sathyaraj).The film also stars Soubin Shahir, Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, among others, and featured music by Anirudh.
