Nani on choosing women-centric films

Telugu Star Nani has made a name for himself playing relatable, guy-next-door kind of roles, something his fans love and appreciate. But Nani is also the kind of actor who is not hung up about having the spotlight always on him as the protagonist. He was, after all, a fly for the most part of SS Rajamouli’s Eega, wherein he and Sudeep were in a tussle about getting Samantha’s affection. Like Eega, most of Nani’s films have one thing in common - the women carry the story. Whether it is Gang Leader, Shyam Singha Ready, Ante Sundaraniki or even Dasara, the stories revolve around the women.

In Dasara, for instance, the whole story is about Vennela, played by Keerthy Suresh. OTTplay asked Nani if his choice to be a part of such film was a conscious decision or not and this is what he had to say. Speaking about female characters driving the stories in his films, he said, “I think the whole world works like that – it’s the reality. And, if it is not like that, I believe that any story, if that core emotional point is not a female, then there’s no depth to it. The films become too dry if that’s not the case. It’s not a conscious decision to do only those kind of films, but subconsciously, I think they are the ones that excite me.”

Speaking to OTTplay about his role in the film as Dharani, a ruffian who steals coal, Nani said, “I have always presented myself as a guy who is one of the masses, but one who can also rise up to the occasion. Dharani is also one such guy; it’s just that the rising up might happen quite dramatically in Dasara,” he said.
