Director Prem Kumar: Had I made Meiyazhagan in Malayalam, Tamil audience would have celebrated here

Director Prem Kumar, whose last film, Meiyazhagan, is close to completing one year since its release, recently spoke about the reception the film got. Hailed by critics, Meiyazhagan did not receive much favourable response theatrically in financial terms. In a recent interview, Prem Kumar spoke about the feedback he got.

Meiyazhagan, the 2024 Tamil drama film starring actors Karthi and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles, is one film which had immense love pouring in from a section of audience. In a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, on the occasion of the film completing one year since release, director Prem Kumar talked about the reception it got.

“Many had said this to me, and what I agree on too. They had said I should have rather made Meiyazhagan in Malayalam because people here appreciate films coming from outside instead of celebrating locally made films. It was very saddening to listen. It was difficult to accept that someone would like a film when it comes from elsewhere, but that is true. There was one section of people who liked the trimmed version, while others liked the longer version,” Prem Kumar said.

To this, a few netizens have commented saying that not all Malayalam films do well in Tamil Nadu and collect in crores, barring a few, while others said that Meiyazhagan was celebrated by reviewers in Tamil.
