Prithviraj Sukumaran is currently promoting the second part in the Lucifer trilogy, Empuraan, which releases on March 27. The story of Lucifer will be complete only with part 3, but is that his next?

Malayalam actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran completed the last leg of the promotions of his next directorial, Empuraan, in Bengaluru on March 26. The film, written by Murali Gopy and led by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is the second instalment of what the writer-director combo has envisioned as a trilogy. The first was 2019’s Lucifer which introduced audiences to Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal), a formidable figure in Kerala’s political landscape, who, we are also told, has a mysterious past.
Empuraan explores that bit of the story – Stephen as Khureshi Ab’raam – and why he took on that avatar. However, while Lucifer could be considered a stand-alone film, Prithviraj has been emphatic that to understand the entire character arc of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam, one would have to also watch the third and final part of the trilogy.

That, of course, begets the question, is L3 Prithviraj’s next directorial? Well, the actor-filmmaker had said that he is now looking at making good on an earlier commitment. Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Prithviraj said that his next directorial will be for Hombale Films, a collaboration that had been announced a few years ago, as Tyson. He did not elaborate if it would still be Tyson or commit to a timeline, given that he has commitments as an actor too, including the film with SS Rajamouli and, Salaar Shouryanga Parva with Prashant Neel and Hombale Films.
Given that Prithviraj has been quoted as saying that he needs at least 2 years to direct a film, that would also mean that L3 or whatever he chooses to call the final segment of Lucifer, is several years away. For now, fans will get Empuraan on March 27. The film will be in theatres world-wide in Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, including an IMAX release. In Karnataka, Hombale Films is distributing the film, given that Prithviraj returns the favour for all of their movies in Kerala.

Tyson was first announced way back in 2022, and was said to be yet another Prithviraj-Murali combination. The announcement image implied that Prithviraj would be playing an IAS officer in the film.
