In the last few years, Suhatro Mukhopadhyay became a household name for portraying one after the other characters in popular shows, including Ishaa Saha’s Indu, Anirban Chakrabarti’s Eken Babu, and Ritwick Chakraborty’s Gora. After working on the second lead for a while, he will be seen in Abhrajit Sen’s Dakghor as the protagonist opposite Ditipriya Roy. In March, he will also be seen in Sebhashree Ganguly’s Indubala Bhaater Hotel. In a candid chat, Suhotra opens up about his journey as an actor and the characters he plays. Read on…

Talking about the character in Dakghgor, Suhotra said, “The name of my character is Damodar. He goes to Hagda as a postmaster. He is a defeated person. When he goes to Hagda, he meets new characters and his life starts changing. He starts sorting the undelivered letters and he sees how the lives in the village change as the letters are delivered. His relationship with Manjari (Ditipriya) and Madhusudan (Kanchan Mullick) is very sweet. His perspective changes as he starts living in the village. Dakghor is a love story and overall a story of human relationships.”

In Dakghor, Suhotro plays the main protagonist. This comes after a series of shows where he plays the second lead. “It is a natural progression in a way. I have been working and enjoying my character. This, in a way, is an elevation but it did not happen consciously. Even for Dakghor, I was selected after auditioning for the show,” he said.

In Dakghor Suhatro pairs up with Ditipriya. “Before knowing her, I was told that she is snob, snooty, and arrogant. Once I started working with her, I realised she is far from what I heard. She was fun to work with. We bonded well. Along with our director Abhrajit, we catch up and hang out even after the work is over,” he said.

On March 8 – International Women's Day – Hoichoi’s other ambitious web series Indubala Bhaater Hotel will be released. Suhotra plays an important character in the show. “There my character is a small but significant one. I cannot divulge much for the sake of the character, but it was really a challenging one,” he said.

In the show, Suhotra shares the screen with Subhashree. Talking about his experience, he said, “It was a part nostalgic-part exciting moment. As I was growing up, I watched her as a star on the big screen. And then I share the screen space with the heroine I used to watch in awe,” said the actor.

In the digital space, Suharto works in three popular web shows – Eken Babu, Indu, and Gora. When he was asked to rank them, he said, “I feel my character in Indu is different from the two and hence it sits on the top. Then comes Gora because I got to see Ritwick Chakraborty closely and learn from him. We improvise on the set and that has its importance. I Eken Babu comes the last,” he said.
