2023 was unquestionably a dismal year for Malayalam cinema, with several films falling flat due to their bland plots and subpar acting. Some could wow them, but others, despite having a strong cast, could not make an impression on the crowd or the box office. Here is a list of Malayalam films that raised expectations but tested the viewers’ patience following their release.

Alone

The public, especially the actor's fans, had high expectations for this Mohanlal-Shaji Kailas movie. But it did not entertain or pique the curiosity of the audience. Undoubtedly, the film was an experimental production that was not received well in theatres. (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)

Djinn

Djinn keeps the audience wondering what the plot of this fantasy drama film is all about. Even with a strong cast that included Santhi Balakrishnan and Soubin Shahir, the film was unable to have an impact on the viewers.

Oh My Darling

Oh My Darling by Anikha Surendran and Melvin G Babu did not satisfy the audience in terms of comedy or romance. The movie, which attempted to address a significant topic as well, fell short due to its flimsy plot and mediocre acting. (Streaming on Amazon Prime)

Ramachandra Boss & Co

Despite his popularity among Malayali viewers for his humorous parts, Nivin Pauly's Ramachandra Boss & Co. failed to impress the audience. Among the other Onam releases, RDX: Robert Dony Xavier and King of Kotha, the movie didn't leave much of an appeal.

King of Kotha

One thing King of Kotha had generated since the project's announcement is high anticipation. Despite making a good collection on its premiere day, it was unable to maintain its momentum in theatres. Viewers were let down by a weak plot and forced dialogues. (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)

Bandra

Another movie that failed to deliver the customary Dileep magic. Bandra had a talented cast, but the film failed to grab the attention of moviegoers. The flick was a box office letdown due to its shoddy plot and dearth of captivating elements.
