The release date of Gold has been one of the most hotly debated topics in Mollywood this year. The film, which had a huge hype, as it marked Alphonse Puthren’s comeback directorial after seven year, had been postponed after the team had initially announced its theatrical release to be during Onam. The movie did finally hit theatres in December, but it seems that the movie’s OTT release could also follow the same route.

In a social media post last week, Alphonse had taken to his social media page to announce that the movie will drop on Amazon Prime Video on December 29. However, the filmmaker has now deleted the post.

Amazon Prime Video is yet to officially announce the release date of the Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nayanthara-starrer on its platform. That doesn’t mean that the movie won’t drop on December 29 either as there was a strong buzz, just days after Gold hit theatres, that the movie will begin streaming in December itself. The OTT platform had also not heavily advertised the streaming date of its latest Malayalam OTT release, 4 Years.

It's not clear whether Alphonse deleted the post because the streaming service had changed its plan. Another reason could be not to anger the Malayalam producers and theatre exhibitors body, FEUOK, that has been pressing for a window of at least a month before a movie hits OTT platform after its theatrical release. If Gold was to drop on Amazon Prime Video, it would have completed less than four weeks since its release.

This, however, was expected, given that the movie had a truncated run in theatres as it didn’t quite match the hype it had. Gold, which is produced by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames, didn’t do well in the box office but was a profitable venture regardless, said Prithviraj, in a recent interview.
