The film fraternity and the viewers have been unanimous in raving about the teaser of HanuMan, writer-director Prasanth Varma’s upcoming superhero film based on the popular character from Ramayana. The teaser was launched on Monday and two days later too, the team continues to garner applause for its visual appeal and imaginative execution. HanuMan will release in five languages.

While Teja Sajja essays the titular character, Amritha Aiyer, Vinay Rai and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar play other pivotal roles in the film produced by K Niranjan Reddy under Prime Show Entertainment. The Telugu version of the teaser has already moved past the 1 crore mark and the Hindi version is within striking distance of reaching that milestone (close to 9 million views).

Most responses to the film express their awe over the fact that such finesse in filmmaking was possible with a budget that’s well under 20 crore. Some have even taken a dig at Adipurush’s teaser, which received flak from many corners for its tacky VFX/CGI. The film’s release too was postponed as a result to June 2023, with the makers looking to rework the visual aesthetic entirely.

A distinct advantage that Telugu cinema has always had in this genre is the filmmakers’ deeper understanding of mythology. The storytellers here have always found ways to strike a parallel between modern-day events and mythology, even in regular mainstream films. They are benefited by the larger understanding of the epics, it’s almost muscle memory for many and they have a clear perspective of what audiences expect from a film deep-rooted in mythology.

With Prasanth Varma, what has worked even better is his understanding of world cinema and awareness of the aesthetics within popular superhero films. HanuMan, as a result, feels like a beautiful blend of visual imagination, mythology and strong technique. The VFX is top-notch and the film promises to offer a compelling viewing experience.

Shivendra is the cinematographer for the film edited by SB Raju Talari. Gowra Hari, Anudeep Dev and Krishna Saurabh score the music for the film with Sri Nagendra Tangala handling production design. Chaitanya is the presenter.
