Is Vir Das banking on Dhurandhar popularity for Happy Patel?

While talking to Firstpost, Vir Das shared how Happy Patel was inspired in times when there was no mainstream. Today, spy culture is so popular that Dhurandhar is ruling in cinemas. "When I thought of it, there was no mainstream spy culture," Vir said, adding how India found that after War, Pathaan, Tiger and Dhurandhar success - thus forming YRF Spy Universe, making spy movies mainstream in India. "And when that becomes the mainstream, then you get to do your own absolutely ridiculous version of the mainstream," the actor-director said.

How did Tees Maar Khan inspire Happy Patel?

"The idea I had - about ten years ago Johnny English came out, and Happy Patel tonally is like Johnny English meets Tees Maar Khan. It's ridiculous, absurd and mad, but it is a spy comedy," Vir shared. When asked why would he take inspiration by Tees Maar Khan, that is tagged as brain rot today, Vir shared, "It’s a huge compliment to call your film brain rot. I do not perceive that anything negative. Happy Patel is brain rot."

How has comedy changed from Delhi Belly to Happy Patel?

When Vir was asked the very question of how Happy Patel is different from Delhi Belly which saw his trio with Aamir and Imran Khan, the actor pointed out the difference in the two eras. He recalled how Delhi Belly and even Go Goa Gone released at a time when cinema was in its soft era. Citing examples of films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Parineeta working at the Box Office at the time, Vir compared to how we grew from that era to now Mirzapur and Paatal Lok rulijg on OTT when Happy Patel releases. The director now focuses on the goofiness of his movie over the language. "There are far edgier things in the world," he points out, adding the need to lean to more silly, stupid and ridiculous. Vir also joked about how the budget drastically stays in control when you direct, write and act in a movie at once.

Happy Patel, also starring Mona Singh, released in theatres and is welcomed with positive reviews so far.
