If you caught Wednesday’s first episode of Loki but didn’t quite catch the DB Cooper reference, then you are not alone. The scene was included by the Marvel series’ writer Michael Waldron, who recently shed some light on the character.

Cooper became infamous because of the stunt he pulled off in 1971. Reportedly, a man named Dan Cooper had boarded a flight from Portland and Seattle, and just like in the episode, passed a flight attendant a note, saying that he had a bomb.

He demanded that when the flight landed in Seattle, he should be provided $200,000 and four parachutes. The authorities complied with his demands and after the safe exit of all passengers, the flight took off with Cooper. Thirty minutes after the ascent, he jumped off the flight, like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki did. Nothing was ever heard of him again nor was his body found.

On scripting this into the first episode, Waldron, in an interview with Decider, said he was just “having fun with Mobius showing Loki the scenes from his life”.

“People, I think when they heard about this show, they always thought, ‘Okay, it’s Loki traveling through time influencing historical events. So we’re gonna see Loki riding with Paul Revere and doing the most basic, PBS sort of stuff.’ And I got excited about, what is the deep cut, really fun stuff that we can imagine? And I just love DB Cooper. It’s a great piece of American folklore and now it’s canon,” the writer said.
