When and where to watch How I Left The Opus Dei

Originally titled El Minuto Heroico: Yo También Dejé el Opus Dei, the Spanish docu-series was first released in October 2024, and later released on HBO Max in February 2025. Now, How I Left The Opus Dei is coming to India on JioHotstar (also accessible via OTTplay Premium) on August 30, 2025.

What exactly is Opus Dei?

Opus Dei, which means 'Work of God', is a special group within the Catholic Church that was formed in 1928. While many people have heard about them in books and in the 2006 movie The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks, Opus Dei has often been seen as controversial, especially because of its ties to Spain's former dictator Francisco Franco.

What does How I Left The Opus Dei show?

The documentary presents personal accounts of a group of women who claim they suffered psychological, emotional, and economic abuse as members of the organisation. How I Left The Opus Dei features interviews and reenactments, sharing the experiences of the 13 survivors from different countries.

According to some reports, Opus Dei allegedly recruited women, sometimes teenagers from the age of 14, often from lower-income backgrounds, by promising them scholarships and educational opportunities. However, once they joined the group, many were reportedly put to work as unpaid domestic laborers.

The docu-series also highlights the 13 women's struggle to leave Opus Dei. Many women left with no money at all, no job qualifications, and starved for days. They had to rebuild their lives from scratch. Some reports say they were later harassed by Opus Dei members even after leaving.
