How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a young Viking who doesn't fit in, living on the island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons are enemies. He accidentally shoots and kills a rare Night Fury dragon, names it Toothless, and, despite his father's disapproval, befriends the creature. Their unlikely bond challenges Viking tradition, and Hiccup must choose between his village lifestyle and his newfound understanding with dragons.
The dragon, which Hiccup calls Toothless, is grounded because of Hiccup's bola attack. Hiccup secretly meets with Toothless, creating an artificial tail fin to help him fly, and they form a strong bond as they explore and learn from each other. Hiccup's newfound knowledge of dragons conflicts with everything the Vikings believe in, but when an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, he must use it to protect his people.
The cast of the original animated film includes Jay Baruchel as Hiccup, Gerard Butler as Stoick, America Ferrera as Astrid, and Craig Ferguson as Gobber. The 2025 live-action film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, with Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick, and Nico Parker as Astrid. The film was written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and directed the animated films.
