Warner Bros has finally dropped the trailer of director James Wan’s latest horror-thriller Malignant and the genre fans are excited to say the least.

After Wan’s reticence in answering several questions fans had about the film, the trailer offers valuable insight. Malignant follows the story of a woman, Madison Mitchell, who is plagued by nightmares of people getting gruesomely murdered. She is shocked to realise that her dreams are actually visions of real-life murders that happened as she slept. Digging deep into her troubled past, which she has little to no memory of, she comes to the realisation that the murderer must be someone from her past named Gabriel, whom she crossed paths with before arriving at her adoptive family’s home. A home video of her younger self describes Gabriel as being ‘the Devil’. With each murder, the mysterious Gabriel seems to be getting nearer to Madison.

The Aquaman director has described the film as being different from what he has brought us in the past, which includes the likes of the films Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring. He has referred to the movie as a ‘genre bender/blender’. In an interview, he has also joked that the film is like a “horror version of Frozen”.

Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, who has previously collaborated with Wan on Annabelle, for which he served as producer. The actress is known for her work on the BBC series Peaky Blinders.

Malignant will be released in theatres and on HBO Max in the US on September 10 this year.
