Tamil star Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan has been embroiled in a row with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) or the Censor Board, which even saw the much-anticipated movie missing its Pongal release date. In the latest update on the ongoing Jana Nayagan censor row, the film’s producers have approached the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court’s stay order. The Madras HC had ordered a stay on the verdict by the single bench of the High Court, directing the CBFC to grant the certification to the film. Jana Nayagan is produced by KVN Productions, which filed a special leave petition with the Supreme Court on January 12, 2026, as per Live Law.

The upcoming Tamil film Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, marks actor Vijay’s final film before he bids farewell to films and enters full-time politics. Much-awaited by Thalapathy fans, Jana Nayagan was scheduled for release onJanuary 9, 2026, as the big Pongal release. However, the film got into trouble after the Censor Board sought for cuts before issuing the certificate. Though the makers compiled, complaints were raised that the film could hurt religious sentiments and it was sent to the revising committee.

The makers then approached the Madras High Court, and the single bench of the HC ruled in favour of Jana Nayagan, directing the board to issue the certificate. However, the HC division bench led by the Chief Justice stayed the single bench’s order. Amid the legal troubles, the film was postponed with no new release date announced as the Censor issues remain unresolved.

With the makers now approaching the apex court, fans are hopeful that the Vijay film will finally get greenlit. Online reports have said that the makers have pleaded for an urgent hearing by the SC on January 13, 2026, however, this has not been confirmed. Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde and Malayalam actress Mamitha Baiju in key roles, along with Bollywood actor Bobby Deol in a negative role.

Parasakthi was the other Tamil film which was to clash with Jana Nayagan at the box office. Sivakarthikeyan film too got into trouble with the board, but was eventually released on January 10, 2026.
