Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna: Karan Johar reveals he fought with Aditya Chopra over Shah Rukh Khan-Rani Mukerji's film, here’s why

Even more than a decade later, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna still remains one of the most memorable and loved works in Karan Johar’s filmography. The film, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta, had gone on to become a box office hit. The film’s writer and director Karan recently revealed that the film had made him have an argument with his friend Aditya Chopra, and the director wishes that he had done some things differently in the film.

The 2006 film starred SRK and Rani as Dev and Maya, a married man and woman who fall in love with each other and cheat on their respective spouses, played by Preity and Abhishek. In conversation with Anupama Chopra, Karan revealed that Aditya expressed displeasure at the part where Dev and Maya commit adultery, believing that the Indian audiences would not respond to it well.

Aditya suggested that rather than having the characters enter into a physical relationship, the story should have had them not go through with it out of guilt. But Karan had remained steadfast in his decision to include the sequence, and the duo had had an argument over it on the phone as well.

Even though Karan had been rebellious about it, he had given it a long thought later, and felt that Aditya had been right about it. “Not optically or anything, but commercially. I feel the country would’ve been far more receptive of the love story had they not gone ahead with a physically intimate relationship”, Karan said.

Earlier, according to a report in ETimes, the director had also said that as a filmmaker, he had certain regrets about Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which he wanted to go back and fix.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is available for streaming on Apple TV.
