Kammattam’s Sudev Nair: Director Shan Thulasidharan’s 6-episode investigative thriller series Kammattam is set for its streaming debut on September 5

Kammattam is the first Malayalam original web series on Zee5 (also on OTTplay Premium), which releases on the platform on September 5, pushed ahead from its earlier August 29 plan. An investigative crime thriller based on real events that unfolded in Thrissur, Kerala, director Shan Thulasidharan put together a 6-episode show in only 11 days, which, he explained in an interview with OTTplay was down to micro-planning, having experienced technicians on board and cramming his cast with filmmakers, who’d understand the value of time.

From being convinced to do Kammattam to a change in characterisation

The show is led by actor Sudev Nair, who plays Inspector Antonio George, whose investigation into an unnatural death leads into homicide, bank fraud and a lot more. Interestingly, director Shan’s initial idea for the character of Antonio was not what Sudev has now brought to the screen, a change that happened once they went on floors with the show. Shan had envisioned an older, down-and-out, alcoholic but brilliant officer, for which Sudev had gained some weight, got silver streaks in his hair and even practised a hobble in his gait.

But once Shan saw the actor in the khaki uniform and how fit he is, he decided to overhaul the character sketch to the young and smart version that’s now in the show. Before becoming a part of Kammattam, though, Sudev was very briefly sceptical about the viability of being able to shoot the series in only 11 days.

“That was my major doubt before committing to the project. I spoke to Shan about his plan to execute and whether it was really viable to shoot it in such limited time. I was convinced that very detailed planning had gone into his pre-production. I knew it would be a bit of a struggle, but that it would be possible to pull off. Once I am convinced, I don’t question the team and just follow the director’s vision,” he said in conversation with Silly Monks Mollywood.
