Kantara Chapter 1 is nearing the end of its theatrical run. It had been reported that Rishab Shetty’s Kantara prequel has a 4-week OTT window, which was confirmed this week. Amid the impending streaming release, on its fourth Monday, the film managed a measly Rs 2.92 cr all India net, with the Karnataka box office registering its first sub Rs 1 cr total. The Hindi version fared minimally better, but the collections from the rest of the markets were negligible, following a minor weekend improvement.

As of Day 25, Kantara finally achieved the highest grosser of the year status, as per trade trackers, a feat that Hombale Films, the production house, is yet to acknowledge. The banner’s official PR team had made the claim days ago, but provided no further information to substantiate the same. According to Sacnilk, as of Day 26, Kantara Chapter 1 had amassed Rs 813 cr in worldwide gross collections, outdoing Chhaava, which had ended its theatrical run at Rs 809 cr. The film will have at least another week in theatres and is expected to get close to the Rs 850 cr mark before it hits OTT.

The question that remains, though, is if Kantara Chapter 1’s collections will be affected by the outcome in the ongoing ticket price cap battle with the state government. Days before the film’s release, the government had passed an order capping ticket rates at Rs 200 plus taxes, which Hombale Films and Multiplex associations had challenged. The High Court had directed exhibitors and audiences to maintain records of tickets, to facilitate refunds, if the government order prevails. A significant portion of the film’s Rs 200 cr + collection from Karnataka will be lost, if the cap is reinstated.

Meanwhile, on October 27, Amazon Prime Video, which had picked up the exclusive streaming rights way back in early 2024, officially announced October 31 as the day that Kantara Chapter 1 will be made available on the platform. It will stream with Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam audio. The Hindi version is also expected on the platform, albeit after the 8 week window.
