Kantara Chapter 1’s worldwide gross stands above the 2022 Kantara, but the film is nowhere near breaking KGF: Chapter 2 records

Kantara Chapter 1 has had a very successful first week at the worldwide box office. The film, which released in theatres on October 2, has outdone the 2022 Kantara, which had ended its run with a worldwide gross of Rs 408 cr and is currently the second-highest grossing film from Kannada, after KGF Chapter 2. All eyes are on Rishab Shetty’s prequel, and whether it will equal or even surpass records set by the Yash starrer. Going by the current trend, though, it looks unlikely for Kantara Chapter 1 to dethrone KGF-2.
Weekday dips in collection, especially after a long festive holiday season, were expected and Kantara Chapter 1’s first Monday saw a 50% slump from its Day 1 performance. It held well on Tuesday, but fell further on Wednesday, registering its lowest total yet at Rs 25 cr (net) for a total of Rs 316 cr as all India figures, after 7 days. KGF Chapter 2 had a cumulative net of Rs 498 cr in the same time period, while week 1, Thursday to Thursday, stood at Rs 523.75 cr. This figure will also remain a KGF record for the foreseeable future.
Interestingly, Chhaava, which is currently the highest grossing film of 2025, had a 7-day net of Rs 219.25 cr, which came from a Hindi version only release. Kantara Chapter 1’s Hindi box office so far has just about broken into the three-figure terrain. Unlike KGF-2, which did exceedingly well in the Hindi belt, Kantara Chapter 1 has not caught on as much.
Although Kantara Chapter 1 opened to largely positive reviews, there’s a strong sentiment that in the pursuit of scale and visual grandeur, story-telling has suffered, with the film, yet again, banking on the ‘divinity’ on offer in the last 20-30 minutes, much like the original Kantara, the novelty factor of which has waned.
Q. Are Kantara and Kantara: Chapter 1 the same?

Q. Where can one watch Kantara Chapter 1?
