Kantara Chapter 1 on OTT: Kantara Chapter 1 is still in theatres as it counts down to its OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video. It is currently the highest grossing Indian film of 2025, ahead of Chhaava

Kantara Chapter 1 would be the film to break into the Rs 1,000 crore club in 2025 – that’s what pretty much everyone thought before the Rishab Shetty film hit theatres. The 2022 original Kantara had, after all, made over Rs 400 cr, after beginning its theatrical run as a rooted story from Karnataka with a Kannada version only, which then went on to take on a life of its own as demand rose from other markets. The film had performed better than KGF: Chapter 1, so, expectations were high about the next instalment in the saga, which was bigger in scale, visual aesthetics and story-telling. What was the payout?
Kantara Chapter 1, according to independent tracking site Sacnilk, became the highest grossing film of 2025, in its fourth week at the box office. The film is said to have made Rs 714.5 cr gross at the Indian box office, while the international figure stood at Rs 110 cr, taking it to a cumulative total of Rs 824.5 cr, pipping Chhaava’s Rs 809 cr lifetime gross. The film is still in theatres and likely to overtake Stree 2 on the list of highest grossing Indian films ever before it winds up its box office run. It is, however, unlikely to get to the magical four-figure number.
Strangely, though, although data has been presented to claim that Kantara is the highest grossing film in India in 2025 and has highest footfalls too, the makers are yet to claim this distinction. In fact, days before trackers estimated that it had reached these milestones, the official PR sent out messages about the film having made Rs 818 cr worldwide at that point, which the banner did not confirm.
It also remains to be seen how the final collections will be impacted when the verdict in the case against the Karnataka government’s cap on ticket prices comes in. As of now, the order stands stayed, owing to which Kantara Chapter 1 opened with increased ticket rates. The Karnataka High Court had urged exhibitors to maintain records of ticket sales in this period to facilitate refunds if the government prevails. The Kantara makers are among the parties opposing the order.
