Kantara Chapter 1 on OTT: Kantara Chapter 1 will be on OTT in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam on October 31. The Hindi version will follow shortly

Rishab Shetty in Kantara Chapter 1
The highest grosser of 2025, Kantara Chapter 1 is headed to OTT in only 4 weeks since its theatrical release. The Rishab Shetty led Kantara prequel’s OTT partner was officially announced way back in early 2024, when shooting for the film had just begun. Amazon Prime Video had picked up the rights, but at the time, it was not clear if it was an exclusive deal or if multiple platforms would host the film, like the 2022 film. When the film released on October 2, the title credits, though, stated that Prime Video was, indeed, the exclusive streaming partner.

However, the film’s OTT release is happening in a phased manner. On October 31, the Kannada original and the Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam versions will be on Prime Video. Since Hindi films have an 8-week mandated window, this version will not be available now. The production house of Kantara Chapter 1 has now confirmed that the Hindi version will follow the 8-week mandate. As such, Kantara Chapter 1 can be expected on the platform around November 27, 2025, we reckon.
The 2022 original Kantara’s Hindi version is on Netflix, with only the south versions on Prime Video. It has been reported that Netflix had floated a bid for Kantara Chapter 1, but was outbid by Prime Video, which, according to unconfirmed reports paid Rs 125 cr for the streaming rights. Between the OTT and satellite rights, Kantara Chapter 1 is said to have recovered more than its production budget. So, it’s Rs 711 worldwide net so far is bonus.

Despite Kantara Chapter 1’s good theatrical showing, there’s also buzz that the film maybe a loss-making venture for distributors in some markets. It was said that the Telugu rights, for instance, went for a whopping Rs 80-100 cr, which would have to be doubled in returns for break-even. However, the Telugu version has only managed to gross a little over Rs 100 cr. The distribution amounts for the other markets have not been made public. Also, in Karnataka, the gross figures are under a cloud of doubt, as the producers are still fighting the government over a ticket price cap that had been introduced. This had been stayed before the release of the film, but should it be reinstated, the makers are looking at forfeiting a sizeable chunk of the Rs 200 cr + gross from the state.
