In an interview with Screen, director Kayoze Irani was asked whether Sarzameen was always planned for a direct OTT release or if he had thought of releasing it in theaters.
Kayoze said, "Honestly, Sarzameen was always an OTT film. That was our plan and our collaboration with JioHotstar. What surprised me in the last week is the YouTube reactions that we are getting, that why not theater. Only now, we are thinking, oh, we got this little feeling (about the theater release). But this has always been an OTT film. People might be looking at the scale and seeing the vibe of it."
He also added that as a director, when he puts the camera on, he does not think of making it a little because it will work for OTT.
"I would like to just make the film I want to make. So, this has always been a plan for an OTT release when we discussed the narration. But it's a compliment, I will happily take it," he added.
Set in Kashmir, Sarzameen follows a family caught between duty and love amidst a growing insurgency. It stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as an army officer, Kajol as his wife, and Ibrahim Ali Khan as their son, playing an antagonist. The other cast members include Rohed Khan, Abil Bhatt, Mihir Ahuja, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Rajesh Sharma, and Tara Sharma.
Sarzameen is directed by Kayoze Irani and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Apoorva Mehta under the banner of Dharma Productions. It will land on JioHotstar on July 25. You can also stream it on OTTplay Premium!
