Disney+ Hotstar is set to foray into Malayalam web series with director Ahammed Kabeer’s investigative crime-thriller titled Kerala Crime Files. The platform announced the project through its social media pages, while also revealing the cast and crew of its first-ever Malayalam web series.

Kerala Crime Files, which also has Kho Kho and Keedam director Rahul Riji Nair as its producer, has Aju Varghese and Lal as part of its cast. The series, which has Hridyam composer Hesham Abdul Wahab, cinematographer Jithin Stanislaus, is expected to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar this year.

The first motion poster of the series hinted that it revolves around a murder at a lodge named Grand Tourist Home. With zero leads, how will the investigators crack the case? The makers are yet to reveal further details about the web series.

Incidentally, this will be Aju Varghese’s second major Malayalam web series for a leading OTT platform. The actor is also part of Deepu Pradeep-scripted comedy series, which is directed by Kurup’s associate director Praveen Chandran. Nikhila Vimal and Sunny Wayne play the leads in the series, which had gone on floors in February.

Meanwhile, several other web series – backed by Sony LIV, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix – are also in different stages of development in Malayalam. Top directors such as Mahesh Narayanan and Aashiq Abu have already been approached for the shows.

Incidentally, a major streaming platform has already given the greenlight for Jan.E.Man director Chidambaram’s web series, which will have Asif Ali in the lead. The series, which is touted to be made on a budget exceeding Rs 15 crore, is also rumoured to be the biggest such project in Malayalam.

Currently, Chidambaram is busy with Manjummel Boys, which has Soubin Shahir, Ganapathy, Sreenath Bhasi and Khalid Rahman as part of the cast. The movie revolves around travel and friendship and has Tamil Nadu and Ernakulam as its main locations.
