Leena Gangopadhyay is known to tell unique stories on TV. Time and again her serials feature strong women with empowerment being the backbone of a show. From Indrani Halder’s Sreemoyee to Sonamoni Saha’s Mohor – Leena’s serials feature independent women. Now, she took Suzi Bhowmik – an artiste from the LGBTQIA+ community – on board in her latest serial, Ekka Dokka. The serial that features Sonamoni, Saptarshi Moulik, Aparajita Ghosh Das and others will see Suzi as a nurse.

Earlier, Suzi worked as an LGBTQIA+ character in the serial Firki, where her acting was talked about. However, it has been alleged that she was not getting any offers in the industry even after that. She even questioned whether they will not get a chance unless it is a story about LGBTQ people. Leena answered that by casting her in the role of a female nurse in Ekka Dokka.

According to Leena, it is her acting that got her the job. In an interview with Anandabazar, she said, “Suzi herself wanted to play such a character. I also like her acting. We do not offer a role based on someone’s gender. If you have talent, you will get a chance.”

Suzi is also happy. “My long struggle perhaps reached its goal. I am happy to break the stereotype and challenge the conventional notion that we will not get a role unless it is a character of an LGBTQIA+ person,” she said.

Suzi’s character in the show is supposed to bring a storm in the lives of the protagonists, Pokhraj and Radhika. The artiste is waiting to get more such offers in the future.
