Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra and Thamma, two films with vampires at the centre of the narrative, were released within a gap of hardly two months. Before his much-anticipated Thamma released in theatres, Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana had said that his Hindi film was much massier than the Malayalam superhero film, which is already a blockbuster hit. But now that Thamma has hit theatres, netizens have been drawing comparisons between the two films, but opine that Lokah is the film done right.

The 2025 Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, narrates the tale of a folklore character Kalliyankattu Neeli. Thamma, on the other hand, revolves around a youth who turns into a vampire. Most of those who have watched both the movies have opined that Lokah scores over Thamma, as the Malayalam film is better crafted.

“Worst movie . Lokah is 100 times better than this bullshit. Learn from the Malyalam directors how to get a decent film in less budget and the way music director Jakes bejoy elevates the bgm of lokah is mind boggling . Thamma left miles behind in music,” reads one comment on Twitter.

Helmed by Dominic Arun, Lokah is also lauded for the character depth and attention to the details, even for the seemingly minor things, but Thamma seems to have lost out on this aspect. One netizen came up with an interesting analogy to drive home this point.

‘No need to compare Lokah and Thamma’

There was also the third set of audiences, who said Thamma and Lokah could not be compared as two are from different genres with one being a fantasy superhero film, while the other is horror comedy.

“Both are literally different genre. How do you even ask about what's better?,” asked one netizen on Reddit.

“Comparing Lokah with Thamma is like comparing an Apple with an apricot, similar texture but different taste,” reads one comment on Reddit.

Thamma, the horror comedy which also stars Rashmika Mandanna, also found its supporters. “In Comedy THAMA is better but but in storytelling LOKAH is better,” reads yet another comment.

Lokah, which also stars Naslen in the lead, became the highest grosser in Malayalam, amassing over Rs 300 crore. It is the first film in a five-part franchise. Thamma is a part of Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which already has seen the more popular Stree, Stree 2, Bhediya and Munjya. Thamma has already made Rs 50 crore in its three-day box office run after the Diwali release.
