Expanding upon the mystical mythos introduced in Shaitaan (2024), Maa takes place in the same realm. In contrast to its predecessor, the film delves further into horror inspired by folklore and religious symbolism, rather than focusing on psychological horror. The plot revolves around Ambika, played by Kajol, a mother whose life falls apart in the ancestral village of Chandrapur following the unexpected death of her husband, Shubankar, played by Indraneil Sengupta. Ambika and her little daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma) visit the hamlet to settle some property disputes as Ambika deals with her grief. However, on their journey, they discover terrifying revelations about a demonic power that has plagued the area for many years.
Ambika is compelled to study the region's troubled history shortly after their arrival due to instances of missing teenage females, one of whom is Shweta. She discovers that a girl's vulnerability to the ferocious "daitya" (devil) Aamsaja begins after her first period. Kali Puja ceremonies and sacrifices connected to a vengeful tree thought to harbour Aamsaja's soul are part of the village's dark history. The terrifying humanoid form of the demonic being is played by Ronit Roy.

Ambika undergoes a dramatic transformation as the probe intensifies. In a fierce confrontation with the demonic presence, she channels the divine force of the goddess Kali, driven by maternal instinct, anger, and faith, all to save her daughter and the other girls who have gone missing.
The theatrical release of Maa took place on June 27, 2025, and reviews were mixed to favourable. The atmospheric world-building and Kajol's imposing screen presence were highly appreciated by critics, who had qualms about the pacing and storyline. Despite this, the film consistently succeeded at the box office due to positive word of mouth among horror fans.
More people will see Maa when it premieres on Netflix on August 22. If you enjoy horror, mythology, and emotionally charged stories with an Indian folklore twist, you might want to add the film to your watchlist.
