Maa Twitter Review: Disappointed fans call mythological horror film 'strictly average' but praise Kajol's performance
Kajol in Maa

Kajol's Maa was one of the most-awaited films of 2025 as it belongs to a not-much-explored genre, mythological horror. Directed by Vishal Furia, the film is a part of Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan, and Jyotika's Shaitaan universe. However, the film has been getting mixed responses from fans and critics on social media.

Reception of Kajol's Maa

On X (Twitter), Kajol's film, Maa, has been getting mixed reviews. Some praised Kajol's performance but added that there was not enough horror content. One fan said, "Ok,one time watch but Jaya Pradha's 1991 #Maa is still the best."

Another fan said that as a mytho-thriller, Maa is impactful in parts, but as a horror film, it doesn’t match up to #Shaitaan. One review stated that Maa is a decent watch with Kajol delivering a standout performance. The VFX and CGI shine, the first half is good, while the second half is better, but it fails to truly hook. The review also added that the unnecessary post-credit scene seems like they were forced to connect.

Another X user wrote, "Kajol stuns in a mythological horror that blends emotion with eerie visuals. First half is slow, but the emotional climax hits hard. A unique attempt with strong performances, especially from Kajol. Watch it for the mother's roar." Yet another netizen said that Maa is a 'strictly average' film.

About Maa

The OTTplay review for Maa stated that the movie may be rooted in the soil of mythology and horror, but it lacks horror elements. "Despite Kajol’s grounded performance, the film gets lost in its own fog, fumbling its divine vs. daitya duel with lazy CGI and lukewarm frights," the review further read.

Maa stars Kajol (Ambika) as a mother who can do anything to save her daughter from a demonic curse. The mother-daughter duo faces a horrific event during a road trip, and they reach a very old and cursed village. The film draws inspiration from the legend of Goddess Kali and the demon Raktabija. The film also stars Ronit Roy as Joydev, Indraneil Sengupta as Shubhankar, Kherin Sharma as Shweta (Kajol's daughter in the film), and Jitin Gulati.
