Maareesan begins with the introduction of Fahadh Faasil’s Daya, a petty but smart thief who is fresh off jail release and quickly back to his profession. His first major theft is a bike, followed by a house robbery when Daya stumbles across Velayudham Pillai (Vadivelu), an old man who is handcuffed to the window and seeks a release. Confused and shocked at being caught red-handed, Daya learns from the man that he suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and that his son has tied him to the window so that he does not wander off. Daya sketches a plan along with his friend Arun (Vivek Prasanna) to take up the opportunity of looting Velayudham’s money by taking down his ATM pin. Meanwhile, the old man’s naivety takes much longer to get exposed as his ulterior motive comes to the fore towards the interval.
With Daya and Velayudham having their own goals, the two end up on a road-trip saga, and it is only much later in the film that Daya finds something suspicious about him. Velayudham has been plotting murders during their road trip, and his secret rendezvous involved scheming his revenge. It is only towards the climax that we come to know that Velayudham’s wife Meenakshi (Sithara) was a children counsellor who had been dealing with cases of sexual abuse survivors. In reality, the wife is the one who suffered memory loss due to Alzheimer’s, because of which she was unable to be a court witness for POCSO cases. However, Velayudham comes to know off the perpetrators from Meenakshi’s diary and sets out to murder each of them. It was in one such instance that he had murdered a perpetrator, and was handcuffed when he had met Daya at the beginning.
The twist is not yet over, when towards the end of Maareesan, Velayudham is still searching out for the last person on the list, and it so happens that it is Daya’s friend Arun. A fierce confrontation takes place between the trio as Daya learns of his friend’s vile intentions towards innocent children. In a fierce physical combat, Daya sticks a rod into the throat of his friend, thus marking his end. The film ends on the note that both are captured by the police and produced in the court for the murder. However, the duo is content that they were able to bring justice to the young children, as they form a bond beyond friendship.
Maareesan, even as it deals with a sensitive topic of child sexual abuse, does not either want to capitalise on being a voyeur of the crime, nor seek attention by depicting the visual gore. The film contains no implicit or explicit scenes of the crime in question, but merely uses dialogues and other characters to talk about it.
Maareesan is available for streaming on Netflix. The film is directed by Sudheesh Sankar from a story written by Krishna Moorthy.
