After almost half of year of holding on to the OTT and satellite rights of Nivin Pauly’s fantasy courtroom drama-satire, the makers of Mahaveeryar has finally tied up with a leading OTT platform for its streaming release.

The movie, which is helmed by Abrid Shine, is a multi-starrer that also has Asif Ali, Shanvi Srivastava, Lalu Alex, Lal and Vijay Menon in pivotal roles. The film had released in theatres in July 2022 and is now all set to drop on OTT.

What is Mahaveeryar about?

The movie, which is based on renowned writer M Mukundan’s story, is a fantasy courtroom drama, which also deals with time travel. On one hand, an ascetic named Apoornananthan (Nivin Pauly) is charged with the case of stealing a temple idol. During the course of legal proceedings, the makers show the legal system of the country is archaic and draws parallels to another case, centuries ago, where a minister (Asif Ali) kidnaps a woman to fulfil the king’s desire. How today’s legal system is applied to the case form the rest of the plot of the film.

The two parts of the film are connected through Nivin’s character. In an earlier interview with us, Nivin, who has also co-produced the movie, said, “It’s a story that happens in two timelines. The hero of this film is its script and we are all just characters in it. Also, it’s a blend of genres because it’s a courtroom drama with elements of time travel and fantasy. The film also asks a lot of pertinent questions and tackles a global issue through a beautiful narrative.”

When and where to watch Mahaveeryar?

Mahaveeryar, which marks Nivin’s third collaboration with Abrid Shine after 1983 and Action Hero Biju, is set to begin streaming on Sun NXT from February 10.
