Movies revolving around the Sabarimala pilgrimage have always had a toned-down flavour to stir the religious fervour among the devotees, but Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan’s upcoming movie Malikappuram is packaged as an entertainer and the makers will be hoping to end the year on a high with the film.

The film has Unni Mukundan in the lead along with several notable actors such as Saiju Kurup, Renji Panicker, Alphy Panjikaran, TG Ravi, Ramesh Pisharody and Manoj K Jayan, who was last seen in Anup Pandalam’s Shefeekkinte Santosham. Child artistes Devanandha and Sripad also play pivotal roles in the film, helmed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar and scripted by Abhilash Pillai.

What is Malikappuram’s story?

The film revolves around the relationship between an eight-year-old girl and her superhero, Ayyappan. How the latter helps the children during an arduous journey to Sabarimala form the plot of the movie, which marks Vishnu’s debut directorial.

Abhilash, who had earlier scripted Indrajith Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu-starrer Pathaam Valavu and Anna Ben and Roshan Mathew’s thriller Night Drive, told us that the team had to shoot for about 40 days in the forests for the film. “It was the toughest shoot I have been part of because most of the locations were areas with leopards and elephants. We also had the two children with us during the entirety of the shoot and had to be extra careful,” said the scriptwriter.

When is Malikappuram releasing?

The movie, which has Vishnu Narayanan as its cinematographer and Ranjin Raj as its music director, is set to hit theatres on December 30. Malikappuram will clash with Soubin Shahir’s Djinn, which is directed by Sidharth Bharathan, and Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju’s Kakkippada – both of which also share the same release date.

Malikappuram, which is touted to be a ‘mass’ entertainer, with action, songs and emotions, is expected to drop on a streaming platform in February 2023, a month after its theatrical release.
