The Malikappuram juggernaut is still going strong in third week. Even as many predicted that the movie’s golden run will slow down this week due to big releases such as Mammootty’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Manju Warrier’s Ayisha and Antony Varghese’s Poovan, Malikappuram seems to have added more theatres.

According to a source from the film’s production team, the film is running in more than 230 theatres in its third week. On its release day on December 30, the film had opened to only 145 theatres and the number of theatres have been increasing with every week, especially with the family audience thronging to cinema halls during the weekends.

The past weekend, the movie’s gross had crossed Rs 40 crore. Malikappuram has already become the highest grossing film in Unni’s career and is expected to have a bigger run in the coming weeks, especially when it releases in Telugu on January 26.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, Unni said, “The greatest assurance I have got is that the audience will back me if I do a good movie. If my movies are able to connect emotionally to the audience, people are coming to theatres in big numbers to watch them.”

The actor also said that the film exhibitors in Kerala are happy that the movie is able to attract the family audience, across all age groups. The producers of his future films too are hopeful that he would be able to cash in on the success and popularity of Malikappuram. “When people across age groups throng the theatres, they know there’s a minimum guarantee for my films,” said Unni, adding that he has several films across genres coming up including Gandharva Jr, Mindiyum Paranjum and Yamaha.

Malikappuram, last week, had also seen an increase in screens in the UK. The movie is also set to release in Australia this weekend and most of the shows are already booked.
