Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan television premiere date locked

Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I has emerged as one of the biggest grossers in the history of Tamil cinema. The film's collection has surpassed Rs 500 crore and is now all set to have its television premiere as well. And now we hear  that the film will screen on television for the first time on January 8 on Sun TV. Since it's a Sunday, the TRP ratings are expected to be high.

Ponniyin Selvan is an adaptation of Kalki's eponymous five-part novel of the same name. The plot revolves around the battle for the Chola throne after the reigning king Sundara Chola falls ill. The star cast includes Vikram as Aditha Karikalan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini Devi, Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman, Karthi as Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan and Trisha as Kundhavai. The film also stars Prakash Raj, Jayachitra, Rahman, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Ashwin Kakumanu to name a few.


While music for the film is by AR Rahman, the art direction is by Thota Tharani. Cinematography has been handled by Ravi Varman and editing is by A Sreekar Prasad.

In the meantime, the makers recently announced the release date of the sequel to Ponniyin Selvan: I. The film will hit screens on April 28 during the summer. Taking to its social media handle, the production house wrote, "The weight of the Chola Crown demands the strongest of heads (sic)."

As part of the promotions, the team is also bringing out a Ponniyin Selvan calendar with 12 illustrations from the film. The makers also provided a glimpse of the sequel which has Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi and Jayam Ravi, which is peppered with some thumping music by AR Rahman.

The first part is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Ponniyin Selvan is bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
