When asked whether The Raja Saab will have a Part 2, Maruthi did not shy away and stated, “We are setting up a lead for The Raja Saab Part 2, but it won’t be a continuation of the same story. It will have a completely new storyline and a fresh setup. The film will remain in the horror genre, but we are planning to take it to the next level and the script will be something no one has touched in the horror genre, but it is too early to talk now.”
This gives a clear idea that the makers have plans to continue the franchise only after seeing the response to Part One. Maruthi has made mid-range films to date, but The Raja Saab is a different ball game altogether.
As he is known for making horror comedies, Prabhas approached him and asked him to prepare a script in the same genre. Talking about the same, Maruthi says that The Raja Saab was initially a horror comedy when he narrated the script to Prabhas, but after a few discussions with the star, he turned the film into a fantasy horror thriller. There is horror in The Raja Saab, but it leads to more fantasy elements.
The character played by Prabhas struggles a lot in the film, and his issues become a fun factor for the audience. “The way he deals with all the fantasy elements in the film will be a big-screen experience that everyone will enjoy,” says Maruthi.
The Raja Saab has been in the making for close to three years and has already been postponed twice. Speaking about the delay and the rumours about Prabhas not liking the final output and asking for changes, Maruthi says, “It was Prabhas sir who asked me to come up with a horror comedy, and if he asks for changes, what’s wrong with that? He is my ultimate audience and the final judge of the product. If he likes the film, the audience will like it too.”
Maruthi has given a lot of time to this film, which also features Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, and Zarina Wahab. Speaking about the veteran actress, Maruthi says she is the surprise package of the film and has a key role in this story about a grandmother and her grandson.
“We have made The Raja Saab keeping every section of the audience in mind. Right from kids to family audiences, everyone will have a blast in theatres. For Prabhas fans, we have brought back the vintage Rebel Star, and if everything falls into place, the second part will be even bigger and better,” concludes Maruthi.
JioHotstar has bagged the digital rights to the film for a record price, and once it lands on OTT, it can be streamed on OTTplay Premium. Stay tuned for more updates on this project ahead of its release.
