Based on Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7 Bong Joon Ho helms, writes, and produces the film, which is his next feature film after the Oscar-winning Parasite (2019). Starring Robert Pattinson, Mickey 17 tells the story of Mickey Barnes, an "expendable" human destined to colonise the frozen planet Niflheim in the year 2054. With each death of Mickey, a new clone is created, containing all of the memories from the prior versions.

Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Anamaria Vartolomei, Daniel Henshall, Stephen Park, Cameron Britton, and Patsy Ferran are all part of the cast alongside Pattinson. With a combination of dark comedy, existential concerns, and science fiction world-building, the ensemble gives performances that fit the film's high-concept premise.
