Mindiyum Paranjum on OTT: Here’s a look at the climax of Unni Mukundan-Aparna Balamurali's Malayalam film, which borrows its core concept from O Henry’s short story.

Mindiyum Paranjum is the latest Malayalam movie to hit the digital space, along with actor Mathew Thomas’ horror comedy Nellikkampoyil Night Riders. Mindiyum Paranjum narrates the tale of married couple Sanal and Leena, played by actors Unni Mukundan and Aparna Balamurali, who are in a long-distance relationship. Do they finally reunite at the end of Mindiyum Paranjum amid torrential rains? Here’s a look at the climax of the Arun Bose film, which borrows its core concept from O Henry’s short story.

Mindiyum Paranjum revolves around the loving couple of Leena and Sanal, with the wife constantly urging (not nagging) the husband to return home from the Gulf. Sanal is finally coming back home after two years. The film also features their story of how they came together, braving various challenges through non-linear flashbacks. Even as Leena is eagerly waiting for Sanal’s return, torrential rains put a shadow over their lives.
Towards the fag end of Mindiyum Paranjum, we see that Sanal is stuck in the torrential rains. Leena is also unable to reach him as his phone runs out of charge. Leena, who has already lost her mother to a rain-related calamity years ago, is left tensed and apprehensive. There is no power in her house, and she is left fervently praying to God. Just when we thought that the film is going to end on a tragic note and Leena wearing the worst, a car arrives. Leena opens the door to see Sanal and cannot believe her eyes. For a split second, even the viewers would wonder if this is a dream sequence, as the next day the shot opens with the front view of the house, and there is no car. However, Sanal is very much present and all the tension is wiped away as they share some lovey-dovey moments. But the real twist happens next, which is the connection to O Henry’s short story.
The real twist in the climax is when Leena hands him a cheque with a huge amount of money, after having sold off much of her ancestral property. This was her surprise gift to her husband on their wedding anniversary. Sanal is taken aback, but has a surprise of his own. He had actually ended his NRI life and was planning to do farming in the land that Leena had just sold off. Still, the film ends on a positive note as Sanal says that they would find something to do with the money from the property sale.
If you still haven’t guessed, the twist in the climax directly harks back to a famous short story by O Henry, The Gift of the Magi. In the story published first in 1905, a husband and wife give up on their cherished item to buy Christmas gifts for the other. But these very gifts have become pointless, in what is being said as cosmic irony. Director Arun Bose’s film begins by quoting O Henry’s famous lines “Life is full of sniffles, sobs and smiles. With sniffles predominating.” And Mindiyum Paranjum also stands true to it.
