Mohanlal and Samarjit Lankesh in Vrusshabha

On December 16, the trailer of Vrusshabha, Mohanlal’s much-delayed film with Kannada director Nanda Kishore, was revealed. As explained multiple times by the filmmaker, the film follows a story of reincarnation, wherein foes of the past are reborn as father and son and explores if vengeance or love will emerge victorious in the end. Mohanlal is paired with Ragini Dwivedi in the film, while one-film old Samarjit Lankesh (the son of filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh), is the son and Nayan Sarika his love interest.

Vrusshabha trailer gives Mohanlal fans hope of a year-end hit

While an earlier teaser had netizens exclaim that the visual quality was good and that they hoped for a good story to back it, the trailer surprised them further. “Better than expected”, is the overwhelming sentiment on social media in response to the trailer. Netizens pointed out that all the promotional material so far has maintained a minimum quality, and that the trailer also came out well. The hope, they say, is now for a good film as well.

It was, however, felt that a young popular hero from Telugu would have been a better choice for the son’s role, considering that it is being marketed as a Malayalam-Telugu bilingual. Incidentally, the film was initially announced with Mohanlal and Roshan Meka, but somewhere along the way, the Samarjit Lankesh replaced him. Nayan’s role was meant to be Shanaya Kapoor’s south film launch and she’d even shot for one schedule.

By and large, the response to the trailer has been good, but not everyone’s on board. Some felt that that Malayalam dialogues were not up to the mark, while a few added that there’s no hype around the film and that it is unlikely to do well at the box office. Even then, they added that it may not be as massive a debacle as Marakkar.

When the film was announced, Malayali audiences were sceptical of how it would turn out, given that Nanda is credited with Pogaru, among others, on his filmography and his last, Raana, was a theatrical failure. This is also why there were low expectations of Vrusshabha. Will Nandakishore truly surprise audiences?
