At midnight today, the psychological criminal thriller series Mrs Deshpande debuted on JioHotstar (OTTplay Premium), starring Madhuri Dixit in the titular role. Following her OTT debut in The Fame Game and Maja Ma in 2022, Dixit makes her digital space return in the six-episode series directed by Nagesh Kukunoor.

Dive into director Nagesh Kukunoor's diverse filmography, from the critically acclaimed drama Iqbal and the gritty series Mrs Deshpande to the historical investigation The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, all streaming now on OTTplay Premium.

Plot origins and premise

An official Hindi-language remake of the 2017 French thriller series La Mante is called Mrs. Deshpande. The story follows Seema Deshpande, portrayed by Madhuri, an infamous serial killer who has spent the last quarter of a century behind bars for a string of horrific killings. A fresh series of murders in Mumbai, with an approach that is eerily similar to Deshpande's earlier crimes, sets the plot in motion.

Arun Khatri, played by Priyanshu Chatterjee, approaches Mrs Deshpande in a last-ditch effort to apprehend the copycat killer. Inspector Tejas, played by Siddharth Chandekar, has spent his adult life without knowing his mother's sinister past, but she agrees to cooperate with the inquiry if only he and she are able to talk and collaborate.

Character transformation

Along with Rohit Banawlikar, Kukunoor (renowned for films like Iqbal and Dor) is the series director and creator. The show focuses on Dixit's psychological profile instead of her typical onscreen presence, emphasising a "de-glam" portrayal of the actor.

All six episodes of the series on JioHotstar were released at the same time. The duration of each episode is around 45 to 50 minutes. Subtitles in a number of regional and foreign languages supplement the original Hindi version of the series.

Critical acclaim for Madhuri Dixit

According to early reviews, Madhuri's portrayal in Mrs Deshpande is very different from her other roles. Her ability to portray a motherly, instinctive side with a cool, calculated attitude has garnered praise from critics.

The show's atmospheric tension and Kukunoor's steady direction have been lauded by several reviewers, while the pacing has been criticised for occasionally leaning towards melodrama. Even though the story is based on the same French series as in other adaptations (such as South Korea's Queen Mantis), the Indian version adds local cultural aspects and family dynamics while staying true to the original.
