The past year, Malayalam superstar Mammootty’s fans have lauded his streak at the box office – from Bheeshma Parvam to Rorschach. The megastar, however, seems to care less about the revenue a film brings in compared to how much his films entertain the audience.

In a recent interview with actor Ramesh Pisharody, Mammootty had talked about how he felt about doing arthouse movies vis-à-vis the commercial ‘mass’ films. His two releases this year – Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and B Unnikrishnan’s Christopher – might not have worked wonders at the box office like his movies in 2022 had, but the actor is still being praised for his portrayals in both films.

“With regards to so-called award and commercial films, we do films for everyone to watch. It’s not like only a small group of people watch the film and give their feedback; everyone who can watch it, should. It makes us happier when more people watch this film. Beyond the film’s revenue, what matters is that the audience is entertained; that’s what gives us happiness,” said Mammootty.

The megastar, who is currently shooting for cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj’s debut directorial Kannur Squad in Pune, also said that audience has changed today and that’s something that all filmmakers and artistes must be cognizant about, the actor explained. “That’s also why this film, in spite of not being a masala commercial film could be enjoyed and appreciated by the audience,” said the megastar.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, which is scripted by S Hareesh, marked the first collaboration between Mammootty and Lijo. The movie, which is produced by Mammootty Kampany, is set to begin streaming on Netflix from February 23.

Meanwhile, Mammootty’s Christopher, which also has Amala Paul, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sneha and Vinay Rai, is set to drop on Amazon Prime Video in March. The film has the actor essaying the role of a ‘vigilante’ police officer.
