Netflix and the producers of The Last Kingdom have officially confirmed its fans’ worst nightmare. The show’s fifth season, which is currently being filmed in Hungary, will also be its final season.

The historical fiction show, starring Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Emily Cox and Tobias Santelmann, is based on Bernard Cornwell's thrilling Saxon Stories series. Currently, four seasons of the gripping series are available on Netflix, and fans are eagerly awaiting the next one.

The show will continue to follow the show’s protagonist, Uhtred, a fearless warrior raised as a Dane in the 9th and 10th century ancient England. In the final season, he will have a higher ambition and will have to take down his enemy while going through suffering and loss like never before.

The show’s final season also has a few new additions. These include Patrick Robinson as Father Benedict, Sonya Cassidy as a smart Saxon named Eadgifu and Harry Gilby as Aethelstan, a youngster trained by Uhtred to follow in his footsteps.

The Last Kingdom's final season will also have an episode directed by its lead actor Dreymon, who, while speaking about the last season, said, “I can’t wait to share it with our fans, without whom none of this would be possible.” Other directors of this season include Andy Hay, Anthony Philipson, Paul Wilmshurst and Jon East.
