While it has been a dull phase for Tamil cinema in 2025, it has not completely eliminated the audience of some good films. Some of 2025’s Tamil films, like Dragon, Kudumbasthan and Tourist Family, resonated with audiences, while films like Kingston and Yamakaathaghi attempted to do something different in their approach to storytelling.

2025 will also be an exciting year, given almost every star would have a release, from Suriya’s Retro, Ajith Kumar’s back-to-back films Vidaamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugly, Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, Coolie featuring Rajinikanth, and lot more films like Idly Kadai, Madharasi, and more. Madras Matinee – SunNXT/ OTTplay Premium (July 4)

Madras Matinee is a 2025 Tamil drama film which revolves around the life of a middle-class family. Directed by Karthikeyan Mani, the film's cast includes Sathyaraj, Kaali Venkat and Roshini Haripriyan. Shelly, George Mariyan, Sunil Sugatha, Madhumitha, Geetha Kailasam, and Banupriya among others. Madras Matinee is about a sci-fi writer who is challenged to write a story on a middle-class family.

Paramasivan Fathima – Aha Tamil/OTTplay Premium (July 4)

Paramasivan Fathima is a 2025 Tamil horror thriller film, which is directed by Esakki Karvannan who also produced and wrote it. Featuring Vimal, MS Bhaskar, Sriranjani and others, the film has A certificate. It revolves around two villages which are at loggerheads with each other due to their religious differences. As a series of murders take place, it leads to horrific revelations involving spirits.

Jinn- The Pet – SunNXT/OTTplay Premium (June 20)

Jinn - The Pet is a Tamil fantasy drama film Mugen Rao in the lead role. It is written, directed, and produced by TR Bala in his directorial debut with Bhavya Trikha as the female lead, along with Bala Saravanan, Imman Annachi, Radha Ravi, Vadivukkarasi, Nizhalgal Ravi, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, George Vijay, Master Shakti and others. The film revolves around a man who brings home a mystical box, which contains a supernatural entity Jinn. What he once blamed for his family's ill fate, then turns out to be the saviour.

Ace – Prime Video (June 13)

Ace is a Tamil heist comedy film featuring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role and featuring Kannada actor Rukmini Vasanth in her Tamil debut. Directed by Aarumugakumar, Yogi Babu, Divya Pillai, Babloo Prithveeraj, BS Avinash, Muthu Kumar, Raj Kumar, Denes Kumar, and others are also part of the film. Set predominantly in Malaysia, the film features Vijay Sethupathi playing Bold Kannan, a man with a shady past who arrives in the country to start afresh. But after meeting a motley group of characters and falling victim to a ruthless loan shark, he plans a heist and has to escape the police.

Eleven - Aha Tamil/OTTplay Premium

Eleven is a 2025 crime thriller film written and directed by filmmaker Lokkesh Ajls, who has earlier assisted Sundar C in films like Kalakalappu 2 and Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven. Shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu languages, the crime thriller features actors Naveen Chandra and Reyaa Hari in lead roles. Eleven revolves around a cop probing a serial killer case.

DD Next Level - ZEE5/ OTTplay Premium

The Santhanam-starrer is the fourth part in the horror comedy franchise and is directed by Prem Anand. It features Santhanam as a film critic who posts reviews online on YouTube. When he gets called for a movie screening at a dilapidated theatre, he gets to know that a ghost is orchestrating it and gets transported into another world. He must now save his family, who behave like characters in the film, before the end credits roll.

Minmini – ZEE5, OTTplay Premium (May 30)

Written and directed by Halitha Shameem, the coming-of-age story deals with the concept of survivor’s guilt. Actors Esther Anil, Gaurav Kaalai and Pravin Kishore are part of the cast. The director had shot the childhood portions in 2015 and had waited for seven years for the cast to grow up. With music by Khatija Rahman, Minmini is shot and produced by Manoj Paramhamsa.

Retro – Netflix (May 30)

Retro is a Tamil romantic action-drama film starring Suriya in the lead role. The film is directed by Petta fame Karthik Subbaraj. Starring Joju George, Pooja Hegde, Nasser, Jayaram and others, the film is a period drama about the adopted son of a gangster wanting to leave his violent ways behind and make a new beginning with his lover. Santhosh Narayanan has scored the music.

Nizharkudai – OTTplay Premium (May 30)

Nizharkudai is a Tamil film written and directed by filmmaker Shiva Arumugam, and headlined by Thenali actor Devayani. The family drama, which is rooted in the emotional bond between a caretaker and child, talks about a family where the young parents are in pursuit of moving abroad. However, when the parents chase their American dream, the child's emotional support is put to the test. The film's cast also comprises Vijjith and Kanmani Manoharan, among others.

Vaanil Thedinen – OTTplay Premium (May 30)

Vaanil Thedinen is an upcoming web series which is expected to be a romantic drama. It will consist of four episodes with a span of 20 minutes each. Written and directed by debutant Alvin Deva, the musical romantic drama is expected to explore the shades of love and features Madhan Kumar, Shivram, Pooja and Haripriya in the lead roles. The series will explore the love between two couples who are from different walks of life and come with their own baggage.

Tourist Family – JioHotstar (June 2)

Tourist Family is a Tamil family drama directed by debutant Abishan Jeevinth. The film stars Sasikumar and Simran, a Sri Lankan Tamil couple who, along with their two sons, flee the economic crisis in their country to seek a better life in India. The film explores how the family tries to settle into their new neighbourhood without suspicion and win over the others through their warmth. The film also features Ramesh Thilak, Elango Kumaravel, MS Bhaskar, Mithun Jaishankar, Kamalesh Jegan and others.

Lal Salaam – OTTplay Premium (June 6)

Lal Salaam is a 2024 sports drama film directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth. The film features Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in lead roles, and has an extended cameo appearance by Rajinikanth. With music by AR Rahman, the story follows two friends divided by circumstances and ideology, set against the backdrop of a tense socio-political landscape.
