Sanober Shaikh, daughter of the late Hussain Ustara, filed a lawsuit in a Mumbai civil court seeking to stop the film's release. She alleges that the film is an unauthorised biopic of her father, made around his life without prior consent.

The family claims that portraying Ustara - who, according to them, was a law-abiding citizen and the "Robin Hood" of 1990s Mumbai - as a negative gangster character damages their reputation. Sanober has specifically objected to the alleged depiction of a romantic relationship between her father and the character of Sapna Didi (played by Triptii Dimri). She said that in reality their relationship was purely professional, with Ustara seeing her as a sister.

After some legal battle, on February 7, 2026, a Mumbai court rejected the plea to stop the release of O'Romeo, refusing to grant interim relief to the family and allowing the film to proceed with its scheduled release.
